Distance calculation overview

When calculating distances and travel times between locations in your model, in most cases your sites and customers should be geocoded, with Latitude and Longitude populated. To determine distance and travel times, you can use one of the following methods:

  • Allow Supply Chain Guru X to determine the distance and travel time when you run a scenario. You must have Latitude and Longitude populated in all sites and customers. The Straight Line Plus Circuity method is used to calculate the distance and travel time between locations.
  • Populate the Distance and Transport Time columns in the Transportation Policies table. When Network Optimization, Simulation and Inventory Optimization are run, these values are used. For this method, Latitude and Longitude are not required, since you are not calculating the distance and travel time.
  • Create connections and calculate detailed paths in the Transit Matrix table, as described in Calculating detailed paths. You can manually populate Distance and Travel Time in this table, or you can use one of a number of available providers to calculate the values.
    • Values in the Transit Matrix table are used for all technologies excluding Simulation. Simulation uses straight line plus circuity to calculate distance values.
    • When the Distance and Transport Time columns are populated in Transportation Policies, these values are used. If the Distance and Transport Time columns are not populated in the Transportation Policies table, the values from the Transit Matrix table are used.
    • Network Optimization and Transportation Optimization use Distance and Travel Time in the solution. Inventory Optimization uses the Travel Time.

In addition to Distance and Travel Time, you can optionally generate detailed road paths, made up of waypoints, that allow for display of actual road routes on the map.
